Study trip program for students of grade 10 was carried out from October 12 until 17, 2009. The main purpose of this program were to introduce students to campus life and culture, to provide them with information related to study programs available at each university visited and their curriculums, and to strengthen the spirit of students as a group. They have visited Institut Pertanian Bogor (agriculture related programs), Institut Teknologi Bandung (engineering programs) and Universitas Gajah Mada, Jogjakarta (social sciences and medical school). The students also had a chance to visit the geology museum in Bandung, Kentungan seminary, air force academy, Sindangsono Catholic Church and Kanisius publisher in Jogjakarta. They spent half day at Kasongan, learned how to make pottery, and a night out watching Ramayana performance at Prambanan temple.

Student responses to the program are generally positive and most of them satisfied with new experiences and information they acquired during seven days trip. The interesting experiences, according to most of the students, is that they got a deeper look at the possibility universities can offer them for their further study.

The British Council’s 2009 school climate challenge attracted some 200 proposals, 73 of which were realized into projects. Sheryn, Paskalina, and Ivani (Gr. 12) from Santa Laurensia High School proposed an idea on how to transform domestic waste such as leftover vegetables and fruit skins into local microorganisms, which are later used for making compost. These three students involved a group of housewives in their project to make their own fertilizer at home, using their domestic waste. This ingenious idea brought them to the 3rd place in the Go Green Competition, organized by British Council/ the judges believed their creative and innovative project using the natural resources around them as part of the solution for climate change, could have a positive impact on their community. As the winner of this challenge, the whole group had a chance to visit the Green school and Green camp at Sibangkaja, Bali for a four-day outbound program in late August 2009. They were invited together with the other winners from Bali and Sidoarjo. During the program, they learned about climate change, bio diversity, and preservation of Balinese bamboo as well as about shadow puppet. It was indeed an interesting program.

Starting with a school project, these young people have enlightened other teenagers that they can take real action against the impact of climate change by doing simple act. If we don’t care about our beloved earth, who will?
