GOLD MEDAL FROM HOUSTON, TEXAS
Dede Cintya & Evelyn Wibowo (11th graders from Santa Laurensia Senior High
School) had brought us a gold medal from The 2nd Int’l Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, Environment) Project Olympiad in Houston, Texas-USA on 15 – 20 April 2009. Their school project in chemistry, entitled: “The use of charcoal combustion waste in the reduction of acid rain, air pollution, and heavy metal content in liquid waste”. They investigate the use of fly ashes from the burning of coal to reduce acid rain on the water /acid rain (by converting sulphate into calsium convert sulphate), to reduce air pollution (by capturing SO2 and C02 in the air through chemical reactions) and reduce the heavy metal contents in the waste (Magnesium, Alumunium, Mangaan, Copper, etc.). This was followed by 450 projects from high school students from 60 countries, including participants from almost every state in the United States.
Last March, from 11th – 13th, they brought this project before to the 1st Indonesian Science Project Olympiad in Jakarta, won the gold medal. These were a remarkable achievements for Indonesia in worldwide. Congratulations & we are proud of you! (further info for ISWEEEPO, please visit www.isweepo.org)
