International Day

Around The World in 3 Days

Wow! Three Days around the World!
Phileas Fogg, a London gentleman, made a wager that he could travel around the world in 80 days. For the students of Santa Laurensia, they made this impossible by travelling around the world in three days and discovered new things in the process. Want to know how? Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride, this is how they did it!
The three day festival featured different countries where each grade level was responsible to research, present and showcase their talents singing, dancing and acting about the country assigned to them for a day. The other grade levels interacted, watched and learned from their ‘travel’ to the featured country.
January 28th marked the beginning of the festival. The grade 1 students were the hosts featuring USA and students presented traditional American Children’s songs (Old MacDonald & 10 little Indians), dances; a short presentation on how Thanksgiving came to be, from the traditional to the present way of celebrating the feast, and the ‘classic’ peanut butter and jelly sandwich which everyone enjoys.
Meanwhile, the grade 2 students had the theme Philippine Fiesta. The students welcomed their visitors through a song entitled Paru-parong Bukid (Butterfly from the field) and impressed a customary dance called Itik-itik (duck dance). They also presented their projects about the country and showed delicacies which are usually served during festivities.
The featured countries on the second day were Spain and China. The grade 3 students offered information about popular Spanish customs like bullfighting; soccer, etc. They charmed the audience with the traditional Flamenco dance and delighted them with their songs. They even prepared Patatas Bravas and Churros con Chocolate for the audiences.
Simultaneously, in commemoration of the Lunar New Year, the grade 4 students, who represented China, inspired their visitors through enchanting songs and colourful dances from China, Story Telling in Chinese Mandarin translated into English, and Calligraphy, the visitors had the opportunity to try their skill handwriting Chinese characters.
As a culmination of the activity, the third day featured Ukraine and Scotland. The grade 5 students awed their audience through traditional Ukrainian dances with a mix of contemporary and break dancing. They sang traditional songs and presented a game the form of quiz, about the customs of the country.
Grade 6 students shared the history of Scotland and popular myths and legends in separate performances. They thrilled their visitors by staging a traditional dance, performed on most occasions in the country. They also entertained their younger schoolmates with songs like “Flower of Scotland”, “Caledonia” and “500 Miles.”
The first ever “Three Days around the World” celebration certainly made an impact on all the students. They had the opportunity to enjoy, relax and have fun; and at the same time learn new cultural things about many countries for the day.(Mr. Adam Cueras)
