SILVER MEDAL from Non-Biodegradable Styrofoam Waste Project
Studying ecology is the first step to eradicate the ecological problems and to
protect environment all over the world. It is necessary for everybody to learn about ecology and live accordingly from the day of birth till death.
This ecology subject really interest Adrienne T. Sulistyo (XII.A1) & Vici R. Tedja (XII. A2) to do a research on a non-biodegradable Styrofoam waste, which they daily find near us. After doing some researches with a perfect teamwork as well as a full support from the teachers, this team won a silver medal in the 2nd International Environmental Project Olympiad INEPO Euroasia, 1-6 April 2008 at Baku-Azerbaijan.
Choosing the title “Treating Styrofoam Waste”, Adrienne & Vici want to reduce Styrofoam waste by dissolving it in the crude extract of Sunkist orange peel waste containing d-limonene, the component of the oil extracted from orange peel. On the other way, they also try to reduce Styrofoam waste by conveting it into a polymeric flocculant called Sodium Polystyrene Sulphonate (PSSNa) that is obtained by the sulfonation process. This project looks more perfect in the hands of Yohanes Paulus Krisna & Kenneth Darmawan as the creative team, to make its VCD, poster, and booklet.
Congratulations for the team! (Ms. Irene)
