Tips for Reading in Science
As parents, we always do the best for our children. From choosing the best schools that we think will suit our children needs, till helping them study or do their homework. Reading is the foundation of all knowledge and understanding. Why is reading important? Reading is like fertilizing the plants, or providing the mind with nourishment. Reading gives us the basic information about the world around us, it also encourages us to think, analyze and to become more creative. The more we read the richer our vocabulary becomes.
Learning science doesn’t mean learning only about facts. Moreover, learning science also builds skills and develops useful life skills such as: perseverance, honesty and open mindedness. While we read, we are visualizing things or facts. We are predicting, inferring, collecting information and facts and making conclusions, all of those will develop new skills.
Here are some tips that can be used to help your children learn science:
- Build reading habits for your children.
- Help the children to understand what they read by asking them to retell the material. A child who reads fluently doesn’t mean they necessarily understand it.
- Help the children to take notes from their reading. There are many different types of note taking techniques such as: mind mapping, diagrams, and making tables and graphs.
- Teach them to make connections with real world experiences while reading.
- Last but not least, be a model for your children, because children will learn from what they see.
